Bitfinex customer support agent account was hacked: Alert
Bitfinex crypto exchange confirmed that its customer support agent account was hacked & some customers were under hacker’s phishing trap.
Bitfinex is one of the oldest & popular crypto exchanges, founded in Hong Kong in 2012. Jean-Louis van der Velde has been CEO of this exchange since 2013. In the initial phase of the launch, this exchange was providing Bitcoin P2P trading but later added support for other cryptocurrencies & brought easy trading service with integrated banking support.
In the latest report, Bitfinex crypto informed customers that one of its support accounts was hacked between 30 Oct to 4 Nov.
So far it is unconfirmed whether there was a group of hackers or individual who breached the platform’s security but fortunately, that bad actor was not able to steal money from the exchange or customers.
The Bitfinex team successfully recovered the hacked customer support account and also resolved the vulnerability. However, this was not a big security breach for the Bitfinex platform but still, the hacker was able to steal Bitfinex customer money via an easy phishing attack, and the hacker reportedly trapped a few Bitfinex customers under a phishing attack.
As per the report, neither the exchange nor the exchange’s customers lost funds in this incident. Exchange’s team increased its investigation to find other related vulnerabilities & informed customers individually, as some customer data has been exposed.
To catch the culprit behind this incident, Bitfinex informed this incident to enforcement agencies.
Bitcoin whale on Bitfinex
Recently a Bitcoin whale transferred 7,000 Bitcoins from an unknown wallet to the Bitfinex exchange.
According to some people, it will be a very big move for the Bitcoin market because the owner of this high amount of Bitcoins will either manipulate the trade price or sell in big amounts to buy in the next dip.
The current trade price of Bitcoin is $35k & this trade price is 27% higher over the last 30 days of trade price.
